How to Choose an AI Headshot Generator (2026)

A ten-point checklist for comparing AI headshot generators, written by Kissemall, with our own strengths and weaknesses stated openly.

Part of our The Complete Guide to AI Headshots (2026).

The right AI headshot generator is the one whose results still look like you, whose privacy terms you are comfortable with, and whose cost per usable image fits your budget. Style range, speed, file format and usage rights come next, depending on where the photo will go. Always test with your own photo before you pay.

This guide is part of our complete guide to AI headshots. It is written by Kissemall, so after the neutral checklist we show how our own tool measures up, including where it falls short.

What should you check before you choose?

Check ten things, roughly in this order of importance. Most of the answers are on a tool's pricing page, FAQ, terms and privacy policy.

#CriterionWhat to askWhere to look
1LikenessDo results look like me at full size, not just as thumbnails?Your own free trial
2Privacy termsWho processes my photos? How long are uploads and results kept?Privacy policy
3Training useAre my photos or results used to train AI models?Privacy policy, terms
4Pricing modelDo I pay per image, per bundle or by subscription? Does anything renew automatically?Pricing page
5RefundsCan I get money back for unused credits?Terms or refund policy
6Free trialCan I try it with my own photo before paying?Pricing page
7Style rangeHow many backdrops, outfits and crops are there? Do I need more than one?Tool page
8SpeedSeconds, minutes or hours per result? Is there a waiting period before the first result?Tool page, FAQ
9Output size and formatWhat shape, pixel size and file type do I get?Tool page, a test download
10Usage rightsDo I own the result? Can I use it on a company website or in marketing?Terms

Also note how many photos a tool asks you to upload. Some work from one photo; others ask for several.

How do you test likeness properly?

Use a normal photo of yourself, compare the results at full size, and get a second opinion. Sample galleries show a tool's best results, not yours.

  • Use the photo you would really use: good light, no filters. Our tips on taking a LinkedIn headshot at home help here.
  • Compare eyes, nose, jawline, hairline and skin tone side by side with the source.
  • Ask someone who knows you whether they would recognize you at once.
  • Run more than one attempt. AI output varies, so a single good or bad result tells you little.
  • If you wear glasses every day, test with them on.

How should you read privacy and training terms?

Look for specific answers, not reassurance. Good terms say who processes your images, what happens to uploads and results, and whether your photos are used to train AI models. A phrase like "your data is safe with us" with no detail tells you very little.

Look for:

  • Whether a third-party AI provider handles your images, and whose retention policy applies.
  • Whether results stay in an account history, and whether you can delete them.
  • Whether location and device data are removed from your photo.
  • A clear way to ask for deletion or to report misuse.

Our guide to image privacy in AI photo tools goes into more depth.

Which pricing model is best?

The one with the lowest cost per image you would actually keep. Work it out as the total price divided by the number of images you expect to use. Per-image credits suit people who need one or two photos. Larger bundles suit people who want many looks. Subscriptions suit regular use. Check whether unused credits expire and whether a subscription renews automatically.

How does Kissemall measure up?

Here are Kissemall's answers to the same ten questions, taken from our terms, privacy policy and pricing.

CriterionKissemall
LikenessUsually close. AI output varies, so some results miss; generating again usually fixes it.
Privacy termsKissemall does not keep your uploaded photos on its own servers. They are sent to our AI provider, fal.ai, to create your result, and fal.ai handles them under its own retention policy. Generated images are saved in your history so you can download them again, and stay there until you delete them. The image files are hosted by fal.ai: deleting one from your history removes it from your account, while fal.ai keeps the file under its own retention policy.
Location dataLocation (GPS) and device details are removed from your photo in your browser before it is uploaded.
Training useWe never use your photos or results to train AI models, and we never sell your data.
Pricing modelCredits, one per image. Packs start at $2.99, and the price per image is $0.08–$0.20 depending on the pack. There is also a Monthly plan whose credits reset each billing cycle.
RefundsUnused credits from one-time packs can be refunded within 14 days of purchase. A failed generation returns its credit automatically.
Free trial2 free credits when you create an account.
Style rangeOne headshot style: gray backdrop, business attire. A separate Editorial Portrait style gives a more dramatic look.
SpeedEach generation is usually under 30 seconds, with no model-training step first.
OutputA square (1:1) JPEG.
Usage rightsOur Terms say you own the images you generate and may use them as you wish, within those terms.

Where does Kissemall fall short?

  • One style. There is a single headshot look. You cannot pick a backdrop, an outfit or a crop. If you need several looks, a tool with more options, or a photographer, will suit you better.
  • Account required. You must sign up before you can generate anything, including with the free credits.
  • One photo in. The style works from a single photo, so the result depends heavily on that photo's light, angle and sharpness. Tools that take several photos have more to work from.
  • Results vary. Some results will not look enough like you. Each retry uses a credit; only failed generations are refunded automatically.
  • No team plan. Each person uses their own account, or someone generates for others with their permission.
  • Not a photograph. Like any AI tool, the output is AI-generated. If you need a genuine photograph, hire a photographer.

What are the red flags?

  • Promises that every result will look exactly like you.
  • No clear refund terms.
  • No clear statement about whether your photos train AI models.
  • A trial that turns into a paid subscription without saying so up front.
  • A sample gallery with no way to test your own photo.

For the full process, from taking the photo to using the result, see the AI headshot guide.

Key takeaways

  • Test likeness with your own photo at full size before you pay.
  • Read the privacy and training terms for specific answers, not reassurance.
  • Compare the cost per image you would keep, not the headline price.
  • Kissemall is quick and low-cost per image, but it has one headshot style, works from one photo and needs an account.
