Amazon Product Image Requirements: Main Image Rules and Checklist

Amazon's own rules for product images: white background, 85% fill, size and file type, what gets suppressed, and a checklist for AI-edited shots.

Part of our AI Product Photography for Amazon, Shopify & Etsy.

Amazon's main product image must show the product on a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), fill 85% of the image, show the whole product once, and accurately represent it. Files must be at least 500 pixels on the longest side, and 1,000 pixels or more turns on zoom. Below are the rules from Amazon's own help pages, with a checklist to work through before you upload.

This guide is part of our AI product photography guide for Amazon, Shopify and Etsy, which covers shooting and editing for all three platforms.

What are Amazon's rules for the main image?

The main image is the first image on the product page and the one shown in search results. Every product needs at least one main image that meets these rules. If none does, Amazon may remove the listing from search until you add one. According to the product image guide, the main image must:

  • Accurately represent the product in a realistic, professional-quality image, including its real scale, quantity and color.
  • Not be a placeholder, even a temporary one.
  • Show the product as 85% of the image.
  • Show the entire product, with no part cut off.
  • Show the product only once. For example, show the front only, not the front and back together.
  • Show one unit, plus only the accessories that come with it.
  • Have a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255).
  • Leave out packaging, unless it is an important feature, such as a carrying case.
  • Leave out props or accessories that are not included and could confuse the customer.
  • Not show any part of a mannequin.

Amazon's product page style guides page allows a lifestyle photo as the main image only for a few product types: beds, bed frames, mattresses, rugs, rug pads and sofas. Everything else needs the white background.

What size and file type does Amazon accept?

Amazon accepts JPEG, TIFF, PNG and non-animated GIF files between 500 and 10,000 pixels on the longest side. JPEG is recommended, and 1,000 pixels or more turns on zoom.

SpecificationWhat Amazon says
File formatsJPEG (.jpg or .jpeg), TIFF, PNG, non-animated GIF. JPEG is recommended.
Image sizeAt least 500 px and at most 10,000 px on the longest side. Files under 500 px cannot be uploaded.
Zoom1,000 px or more on the longest side turns on zoom, and Amazon recommends it
ResolutionAt least 72 dpi
QualityClear, not pixelated, no jagged edges
Color modeRGB preferred. Convert CMYK to RGB. Grayscale only for gray or silver metal products.
File name (optional)Product ID, variant code and extension, for example B000123456.MAIN.jpg
Not acceptedEPS, BMP, PDF, and software files such as PSD

Amazon's technical image file requirements add a few habits. Use little or no compression. Save JPEGs at the highest quality, and avoid saving them again and again while you edit. Remove layers before you upload. Don't rely on an embedded color profile to make colors look right.

The product image guide also says not to artificially enlarge small images. If a file is under 1,000 pixels, reshoot or export it at full size instead.

What gets a main image suppressed?

Amazon checks images when you upload them. If they break the rules, it may hide the listing from search or remove or change the image. Its image suppression page lists common reasons. For a main image, they include:

  • Text, a logo, graphics or a watermark.
  • A background that is not pure white (RGB 255, 255, 255).
  • Extra items that are not allowed for the product type.
  • Part of the product cropped off.
  • The product in its packaging, or with brand or swing tags.
  • Props inside, around or covering the product.

Blur, pixelation and a product that is too small in the frame can get any image flagged, not just the main one.

The non-white background page adds detail that matters for edited photos. A frame, line or border on any edge counts as a non-white background. The page describes an acceptable background as pure white with minimal shadows around the product. Shadows that run to the edge of the frame are not allowed. Neither are shadows the product casts against a backdrop. If you edit a background out, any leftover off-white or gray areas, artifacts, objects or outlines are not allowed.

To fix a problem, upload a new image with the MAIN variant code instead of deleting the old one. Amazon says changes can take up to 24 hours to appear.

What rules apply to the other images?

Additional images have more freedom. Amazon's non-white background page says they may have a neutral or scene background, so this is where lifestyle and in-use shots go. Amazon recommends at least six additional images and one video.

All images, main and additional, must:

  • Accurately represent the product you are selling.
  • Match the product title.
  • Not show customer reviews, star ratings, or claims such as "free shipping."
  • Not use Amazon logos, trademarks or badges, such as "Amazon's Choice" or "Best seller."
  • Not contain nudity or sexually suggestive images.

Amazon labels these extra slots with variant codes, such as PT01 to PT99 for more views and in-use shots, and TOPP, BOTT, LEFT, RGHT, FRNT, BACK and SIDE for angle shots.

Are there extra rules for clothing, shoes and other categories?

Yes. Some categories add their own rules, so read the style guide for every category you sell in. The product image guide and the image guidelines for clothing include these:

  • Adult clothing: the main image shows the item on a model who is standing, not sitting, kneeling, leaning or lying down.
  • Clothing accessories and multipacks: shown flat, without a model.
  • Children's and baby form-fitting items: undergarments, leotards, swimwear and similar items must be shown flat, without a model.
  • Footwear: a single shoe, facing left, at a 45-degree angle.
  • Clothing main images: photos only, with no sketches, drawings or graphics. No visible mannequins, hangers, folded products, tags or packaging.
  • Clothing frame: a minimum aspect ratio close to 3:4 (width to height), with 85% of the image filled.

The style guides page explains where to download the PDF style guide for your category. Multipacks outside clothing have their own imaging standards page, linked from the product image guide.

How does the Product on White style help?

Product on White turns one phone photo into a shot of the product on a seamless white background. It uses soft, even light, a subtle shadow under the product and a square (1:1) frame. The style asks the model to keep colors true to life and the product exactly the same. Try it in the AI product photo generator. Generation time is usually under 30 seconds.

It gets you close to Amazon's main image look, but check these points yourself:

  • The white: use the color picker in any image editor on several spots, including the corners. Amazon wants exactly 255, 255, 255. For full control, use the transparent PNG option in the background swap tool, place the product on a pure white canvas and export a JPEG.
  • The shadow: keep it small and under the product. It must not run to the edge of the frame.
  • The fill: the product should take up most of the square. Crop tighter only if the file stays above 1,000 pixels, and never enlarge a small crop.
  • The frame: a square image may not suit every category. Clothing, for example, has its own aspect ratio guidance.

Why must the AI image match the real product exactly?

Amazon requires accurate images, and an AI edit can change details. Product on White does not paste your photo onto white. It generates a new image based on it, and our Terms state that every result is AI-generated, not a photograph. So a word on a label, a shade of color or a small part can come out different.

Compare every result with the real product at full size. Check text, logos, color, shape, parts and scale. If anything is different, do not upload it. Regenerate, or reshoot with better light. Results vary between attempts, and each attempt uses one credit. Misleading images also raise consumer-protection issues: the FTC's advertising guide for small business says ads must be truthful and non-deceptive, and that includes pictures.

Three more points for AI-edited images:

  • Amazon requires sellers to tag images that contain a photorealistic AI-generated person with the keyword contains-synthetic-performer. The product image guide says not to add the tag if the image shows only real people, even if they were edited with AI tools, or no people at all.
  • If your photo shows a model, get their permission before you upload it. Our Terms require permission from everyone pictured.
  • Amazon's clothing page allows only photos as clothing main images. Our output is AI-generated, so for clothing, a plain photo on a white background is the safer choice for the main image.
